National Markings
Portuguese Air Force
This section describes and illustrates the various national insignia used by the Portuguese Air Force since its formation:
1945-present
The main marking is displayed in 6 positions (ie above and below each wing, and on each side of the fuselage) on aircraft – but on fuselage sides only on helicopters. The fin flash is displayed on the tailfin. Aircraft do not carry service titles.
Narrative History
Portuguese Air Force
1912 Institute of Portuguese Military Aviation founded with aircraft brought by public subscription. 1914-1915 Army officers flying training with France, Britain and USA. 1917 Arma da Aeronautica formed as separate branch of the Army. 1927 Army aviation considerably expanded and reorganised – now operates practically autonomously under Ministry of War. Late 1937 reorganised and expanded again. 1 July 1952 Army and Navy air arms amalgamated into independent Portuguese Air Force.

Sub-titled ‘Informação Aeronáutica’. The only Portuguese newspaper entirely dedicated to aviation. Published monthly since 1999.
Mainly dedicated to aviation news and topical features but also includes a historical feature in each issue. Also covers air shows, flight simulator games reviews etc.

Sub-titled ‘Aviação e Espaço’. Published by APPLA – Associação dos Pilotos Portugueses de Linha Aérea. Portuguese magazine dedicated to aviation and space exploration. An excellent source of information about aviation (both civilian and military) and space exploration. Featured articles often include research and investigation issues, photography, technology, flight simulation and a lot more. Special events related to aviation usually get awesome coverage by this magazine. Issue No.96 was dated March/April 2003.
