Unit History

I Brigada Aérea

Role: Fighter/Attack.

The unit was formed in 1937 at Base Aérea El Bosque at Santiago with Grupo de Aviación 1 at Iquique, Grupo de Aviación 2 at Valparaiso and Grupo de Aviación 4 at El Bosque. At 1939 the unit consisted of Grupo de Aviación 1 at Iquique, Grupo de Aviación 2 at Valparaiso and Grupo de Aviación 3 at Temuco. In 1940 the brigade moved to Base Aérea Cerro Moreno in Antofagasta and in 1945 Grupo de Aviación 1 at Iquique was the only flying component of this unit.

After a reorganisation Ala N° 1 at Base Aérea Cerro Moreno at Antofagasta, which was formed on 22.2.1954 with Grupo de Aviación 7 (Fighter) with de Havilland Vampire and  Grupo de Aviación 8 (Bomber) with Douglas B-26C Invader, became part of the brigade. In 1977 Ala N° 4 was formed at Base Aérea Los Cóndores at Iquique with Grupo de Aviación 1 (Attack/Training) with A-37B Dragonfly and Grupo de Aviación 2 (SAR) with HU-16B Albatross.

In 1977 the system of the Brigadas Aéreas was dissolved and the Ala became the largest operational unit. But it was only on 21.4.1980 that the unit was reactivated. In 1995 Ala Base N° 1 and its subordinated units became part of the newly formed V Brigada Aérea at Base Aérea Cerro Moreno  at Antofagasta.

At about 1997 the unit consisted of the Ala Base N° 4, composed of Grupo de Aviación 1 (Attack/Training) with A-37B Dragonfly and Grupo de Aviación 2 (Reconaissance/ Photographic) with Canberra and Beech 99 Petrel.
